Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Tigers announced that starter Justin Verlander underwent successful core muscle repair surgery on Thursday.

Verlander will have rehabilitation for the next six weeks and will be re- evaluated at that time.

"We fully anticipate Justin to participate in spring training and be in a position to compete at the beginning of the 2014 season," said Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski.

The 30-year-old right-hander earned his fifth consecutive All-Star berth in 2013, but struggled to a 13-12 record and 3.46 earned run average in 218 1/3 innings over 34 starts for the AL Central champions.
