Recap: San Diego vs. Washington

San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Yonder Alonso tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a two-out home run, and Cameron Maybin won it in the home 11th on a two-out RBI single, as San Diego claimed a 4-3 victory over Washington in the middle contest of a three-game set on Saturday.

Craig Stammen (0-2) tossed a scoreless 10th inning, and retired the first two batters in the 11th. Chase Headley kept his team alive with a single, then Alonso worked a walk ahead of Maybin's single to right which brought in Headley.

Joaquin Benoit (2-0) turned in a scoreless top of the 11th to snag the win for the Padres, who recovered from a 6-0 loss in Friday's opener. Headley ended up with two hits and scored twice, while Maybin drove in a pair of runs.

Ian Desmond hit a two-run homer and Ryan Zimmerman knocked in the other run for the Nationals, whose four-game win streak came to an end.

The Padres cracked the scoreboard in the fourth. Seth Smith's one-out single was followed by Headley's RBI double. Headley moved up on a grounder and scored when Maybin deposited a double to left.

Having been activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to the game, Andrew Cashner worked the first six innings, fanning five and walking one while allowing just two hits.

"I was impressed and very happy with the way he commanded the fastball," San Diego manager Bud Black said of Cashner. "He was nipping the outside corner, the ball was running and I thought the couple handful of sliders that he threw were solid."

Washington, however, moved ahead in the seventh against Nick Vincent. Adam LaRoche and Zimmerman hit back-to-back doubles for the Nats' first run, then Desmond launched an offering to center for a 3-2 game two batters later.

"We did a nice job of coming back in the game," Washington manager Matt Williams said. "We were able to get to Vincent there and get a lead, just couldn't hold it."

Rafael Soriano retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth, but Alonso ensured extras with his two-out blast to right.

Game Notes
