Recap: Oakland vs. Seattle

Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Smoak recorded two hits, two runs scored and three RBI in the Seattle Mariners' 8-3 win over the Oakland Athletics in the second test of a four-game set from O.co Coliseum.

Kyle Seager had an RBI and a run scored for Seattle, which moved above .500 with its season-high fourth straight win and seventh in the last eight games. Seager, James Jones, Robinson Cano and Dustin Ackley all had two hits to account for Seattle's 10.

"We're doing the little things," said Cano. "Everyone is contributing right now and that's what you're looking for. Whatever it takes to win the game."

Roenis Elias (3-2) was touched for three runs on five hits with six strikeouts over 6 1/3 frames, while three Seattle relievers kept the A's off the board for the final 2 2/3 innings.

Yoenis Cespedes homered for the Athletics, who saw starter Jesse Chavez (2-1) surrender four runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings on the mound. Chavez entered the tilt among the American League leaders with a 1.89 ERA.

The A's have dropped four of five following a three-game sweep in Texas.

"Our approaches are fine," said A's manager Bob Melvin. "You're going to go through good times and bad times over the course of the season. We'll swing it well again."

Seattle wasted little time getting to Chavez, putting three runs across in the top of the first inning. Following Michael Saunders' leadoff strikeout, Jones and Cano singled and with two away, Chavez's wild pitch allowed the first run to cross the plate.

Smoak then doubled, Seager walked and Ackley plated Smoak with his single to center.

Oakland cut its deficit to one on Nick Punto's two-run single in the home half of the second.

Mike Zunino chased Chavez from the contest with his sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning, but again Oakland got within a run after Cespedes' solo shot in the bottom of the frame.

Jim Johnson was unable to hold the one-run advantage in the ninth. The A's reliever gave up four unearned runs in 2/3 of an inning as Seattle gained separation.

Brad Miller, who walked to start the rally, scored on Corey Hart's ground out to make it 5-3. Smoak plated two more runs with his bloop single to center, and Seager doubled in the final run. It was all possible thanks to Johnson's throwing error to first on Saunders' bunt attempt.

Game Notes

The two teams have a double-header set for Wednesday ... Seattle finished 3- for-14 with runners in scoring position, while Oakland went 1-for-8 ... Coco Crisp had two hits for the Athletics.
