Pirates' Cole named NL Rookie of the Month

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole won the National League Rookie of the Month award for September.

The 23-year-old right-hander went 4-0 with a 1.69 earned run average in five starts, helping the Pirates clinch their first playoff berth since 1992. Cole recorded 39 strikeouts over 32 innings pitched.

Other rookies considered for the honor included Miami hurler Jose Fernandez, St. Louis first baseman Matt Adams and Cincinnati speedster Billy Hamilton.
