Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - The New York Yankees placed infielder Eduardo Nunez on the 15-day disabled list prior to Sunday's game against the Kansas City Royals.

The move is retroactive to May 6. Nunez has not played since exiting a game against Oakland last Sunday with a left oblique strain.

Nunez began the season as the Yankees' primary shortstop with Derek Jeter still on the mend from a broken ankle, but was hitting just .200 with five extra-base hits in 80 at-bats prior to the injury.

To fill the roster spot, New York selected the contract of infielder Alberto Gonzalez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre.

Acquired from the Cubs organization on Friday, Gonzalez went 5-for-23 with a home run in 11 games with Chicago before being sent to the minors in mid- April. The 30-year-old is a career .241 hitter over 413 major league games with the Yankees, Washington, San Diego, Texas and the Cubs.

To make room for Gonzalez on the 40-man roster, the Yankees transferred first baseman Mark Teixeira to the 60-day DL. The veteran slugger is expected to be out until July due to a partially torn tendon sheath in his right wrist.
