Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Angels activated pitcher Jason Vargas from the disabled list to start Tuesday against the New York Yankees.

Vargas had been sidelined with a blood clot in his left armpit that required surgery. He will be making his first start for the Halos since June 17, when he gave up two runs and struck out a season-high nine batters in seven innings of an 11-3 win over Seattle.

The decision improved the southpaw's record in 14 outings this season to 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA.

Fellow first-year Angel Tommy Hanson was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake to open a roster spot for Vargas.

The righty allowed one run on July 23, his first start after missing a little more than a month with a forearm strain. However, he has completed five innings in just one of his last three outings while posting a sky-high ERA of 8.59.

In 13 starts this season, Hanson is 4-3 with a 5.59 ERA.
