Angels' Vargas earns AL Pitcher of the Month

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim hurler Jason Vargas has been named the American League Pitcher of the Month for May.

Vargas compiled a perfect 5-0 record with a 2.30 ERA, 31 strikeouts and 14 walks over 43 innings pitched while holding opponents to a .206 batting average.

The Angels finished May with a 16-13 mark, winning as many as eight straight from the 18th-26th, with the left-hander securing two of his wins during the streak.

Vargas became the sixth Angels pitcher to earn five victories in the month of May and first since Shawn Boskie (1996).

Others receiving votes included Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox, Max Scherzer of the Detroit Tigers, Derek Holland of the Texas Rangers and Hisashi Iwakuma of the Seattle Mariners.
