Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Kansas City Royals tendered a $14.1 qualifying offer to free-agent pitcher Ervin Santana on Monday.
The move guarantees the Royals a compensation pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft if he does not accept the offer by the Nov. 11 deadline and signs with another team.
Santana posted a 9-10 record and a 3.24 ERA in 32 starts in 2013 as the No. 2 starter in the Royals' rotation behind James Shields.
Over nine seasons with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Kansas City, Santana has compiled a 105-90 record with a 4.19 ERA. He has started 25 or more games in seven of those nine seasons.
While with the Angels in July of 2011, Santana hurled the ninth no-hitter in franchise history in defeating the Cleveland Indians, 3-1. It was the 11th time in baseball history that a pitcher threw a no-hitter while not throwing a shutout.
The Royals did not make qualifying offers to pitcher Bruce Chen, infielder Miguel Tejada and first baseman Carlos Pena.
