Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - The Detroit Tigers on Tuesday issued a statement regarding the return of shortstop Jhonny Peralta.

"In accordance with the protocols outlined by Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement, Jhonny Peralta will join the club for workouts in Chicago beginning on Wednesday. There has been no decision made regarding Peralta's return to the active roster. It is an organizational decision to allow Jhonny to workout with the club in order to see if it will be in the best interest of the team to have him return at the end of his suspension."

Peralta had been suspended 50 games for a violation of MLB's drug policy back in early August, part of a wave of PED punishments that included Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez drawing a 211-game ban -- and that punishment is scheduled to end on Sept. 26, three days before the end of the regular season.

Prior to his forced vacation, the 31-year-old Dominican was hitting .305 with 11 home runs, 29 doubles and 54 RBI over 104 games.

Entering the second edition of a three-game series with the White Sox, the Tigers hold a 4 1/2 game lead over Cleveland in the AL Central.
