Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Chicago Cubs and starter Jeff Samardzija agreed to a one-year contract on Saturday, avoiding arbitration.

No financial terms were disclosed, but the Tribune revealed the new pact is worth $5.345 million.

A Notre Dame product who starred at wide receiver, the right-hander went 8-13 with a 4.34 earned run average in 33 starts for Chicago a season ago.

Since breaking into the majors in 2008, the 29-year-old Indiana native sports a 29-35 mark and 4.19 ERA in 189 appearances (66 starts), all with the Cubs.
