Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox placed Ryan Lavarnway on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a left hamate fracture.

The news comes a day after he left a game against Atlanta in the bottom of the fifth inning with what the team termed a sore left wrist.

Lavarnway, primarily a catcher, made his first career major league start at first base in Thursday's game versus the Braves. He had been summoned from the minors at the beginning of the week.

The Red Sox recalled outfielder/first baseman Alex Hassan from Triple-A Pawtucket in a corresponding move.
