Boston, MA (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox placed Andrew Bailey on the 15-day disabled Monday due to a sore right biceps that has sidelined the closer for more than a week.

Bailey had not pitched since April 28 due to the injury, which will enable the right-hander to be eligible for activation next week if ready. He had converted five consecutive save opportunities prior to being shelved, while yielding just two runs and six hits and racking up 20 strikeouts over 12 1/3 innings pitched during the season's first month.

Joel Hanrahan, who opened the year as Boston's closer before missing more than two weeks with a hamstring strain, will once again take over in that role until Bailey returns.

The Red Sox also activated reliever Craig Breslow from the 15-day DL prior to Monday's opener of a four-game series with Minnesota. The veteran lefty had been out since spring training with a shoulder problem.

In 63 appearances with Boston and Arizona last season, Breslow posted a 3-0 record with a 2.70 earned run average.
