Recap: Bowling Green vs. Akron

Bowling Green, Ohio (Sports Network) - Travis Greene led the way for the Bowling Green Falcons as they defeated Mid-American Conference rival Akron Zips, 31-14, at Doyt L. Perry Stadium.

Greene had 142 rushing yards on 24 attempts and 71 receiving yards on four catches, with two total touchdowns. Falcons (4-1,2-0 MAC) quarterback Matt Johnson went 18-for-24 through the air for 229 yards and two touchdowns. Shaun Joplin caught five passes for 78 yards and a score.

The Zips (1-4,0-1) were led on offense by quarterback Kyle Pohl, who went 22- for-37 passing with 199 yards and a touchdown. He also added 26 rushing yards and a touchdown on six rushes. L.T. Smith had five catches for 89 yards and a score. Jawon Chisholm had nine carries for 28 yards.

On Akron's first drive of the game, Pohl hit Smith on a 51-yard touchdown pass to put the Zips up 7-0 with 12:38 remaining in the opening stanza. Bowling Green answered on their next drive by going 64 yards on an eight-play drive that ended with a 29-yard field goal by Tyler Tate.

The Zips strong offensive attack continued as Pohl led his team to another score on their next drive. Pohl kept the ball himself and ran it in for a three-yard touchdown that gave the Zips a 14-3 edge on the scoreboard with 5:39 left to play in the first quarter.

Neither side managed to score any points in the second quarter until Johnson connected with Joplin on a 22-yard touchdown throw at the 1:41 mark of the frame. Joplin's touchdown grab reduced Akron's lead to 14-10 at the game went into halftime.

After forcing a three-and-out to start the third quarter, Bowling Green drove down the field on an 11-play drive that included a 3rd-and-14 conversion to get it to 1st-and-goal. The Falcons capped off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run by William Houston.

The Falcons offense continued to play well on the following drive and scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Greene, which put them ahead, 24-14, with 1:41 remaining in the third quarter.

The Zips responded by getting the ball down to the one-yard line but were stopped on third-and-goal. Robert Stein missed the short field goal attempt with 12:50 left to play which kept Akron behind by a double-digit margin.

Bowling Green took advantage of the situation by running off as much of the clock as possible. They took 8:01 off the clock with a 13-play drive that ended with an 11-yard touchdown rush by Greene. The Falcons scored 28 straight points after being down 14-3 in the first period of play.

The Falcons are off to a hot start this season, they are 4-1 for the first time since 2003. This also marks the first time they have won their first two conference games since 2005.

Bowling Green was able to withstand a strong Akron pass rush that sacked Johnson six times, including three from C.J. James.
