Recap: UAB vs. Rice
Birmingham, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Luke Turner banged it in the end zone from one-yard out in the first extra session to give the Rice Owls a 37-34 victory over the UAB Blazers in overtime, in a Conference USA matchup at Legion Field.
For the Owls (8-3, 6-1 C-USA), Taylor McHargue finished the night throwing for 139 yards and two touchdowns on 10-of-19 passing, He added 20 rushes for 92 yards. Jowan Davis was the team's leading rusher with 130 yards on the ground and one score on 19 carries. Charles Ross finished with a touchdown and 50 yards on 10 carries but had to leave the game in the first half with an injury.
Jonathan Perry threw for 195 yards and a touchdown on 13-of-26 passing for the Blazers (2-9, 1-6). Perry also ran for 60 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Jamarcus Nelson led all receivers with five receptions for 127 yards. Darrin Reaves scored twice on 10 carries for 32 yards.
After a 47-yard field goal early in the contest got the scoring started, Rice added to its lead when Ross ran it in from 14 yards out in the final minutes of the first quarter.
After their defense recovered a fumble late in the half and returned it all the way to the Rice one-yard line, the Blazers punched the ball in the end zone on the next play with a touchdown run by Reaves. Rice answered when McHargue found Jordan Taylor for a 12-yard scoring strike in the final minute of the half to give the visitors a 17-7 lead at halftime.
UAB opened the second half with a scoring drive, capped off by another one- yard touchdown rush by Reaves.
The Blazers took their first lead of the night when Perry dashed into the end zone from 14 yards out, putting them up 21-17 with 6:40 to play in the third.
Rice answered on their next series when McHargue connected with Jeremy Eddington on an 18-yard touchdown pass with just over four minutes left in the third, as the Owls retook the lead at 24-21.
Midway through the fourth, Davis ran it in from two yards out to push the Owl's advantage to 31-21.
Perry then found Darius Powell for a 20-yard scoring pass late in the fourth to cut the Owls' lead to three.
The Blazers then forced and recovered a fumble in Rice territory on the following possession, setting them up for a tying 24-yard field goal with 37 seconds remaining in regulation. The Owls had a chance to win it in regulation, but a 48-yard field goal as time expired was wide right, sending the game to the extra period.
In the overtime session, the Blazers had possession first but allowed two sacks and had to settle for a 43-yard field goal. The Owls took over and on their second play, Davis busted out a 17-yard run down to the one-yard line, setting up the winning run by Turner.
The Rice rushing attack dominated the game, outgaining UAB on the ground 328-138. Both teams were perfect in the red zone, with the Owls scoring touchdowns on all four of their red zone possessions and the Blazers getting four touchdowns and a field goal on their five drives.Game Notes
