Recap: Rice vs. Fla Atlantic

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - The Rice Owls scored a pair of touchdowns in the game's final five minutes to complete a comeback over the Florida Atlantic Owls, winning the Conference USA showdown 18-14 at Rice Stadium.

Taylor McHargue was ineffective under center for Rice (2-2, 1-0 C-USA), completing just 7-of-25 passes for 69 yards and an interception, but he also led the team with 71 rushing yards. Darik Dillard had 62 yards on 11 carries, including the game-winning touchdown.

For FAU (1-4, 0-3), Greg Hankerson completed 22-of-46 passes for 272 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Jonathan Wallace led the way with 73 rushing yards, while William Dukes (72 yards) and Darion Howard (68 yards) were each reliable targets for Hankerson. FAU, which has lost two straight, is still winless in its new conference.

Rice got the scoring started midway through the first quarter when Chris Boswell booted through a 45-yard field goal.

Less than two minutes later, Hankerson hooked up with Dukes for a 58-yard scoring strike to put FAU up by four.

Boswell added another field goal (47 yards) at the 5:05 mark of the second quarter to cut Rice's deficit to just one, 7-6.

The action remained quiet until midway through the fourth quarter, when Hankerson connected with Nexon Dorvilus on a 15-yard touchdown as FAU padded its lead.

With 4:17 left in the game, Hankerson fumbled after being sacked, and Cody Bauer picked up the loose ball and returned it seven yards for a touchdown. Rice attempted to tie the game with a two-point conversion, but the score remained 14-12 after McHargue's pass fell incomplete.

After intercepting a Hankerson pass, Rice went ahead for good with a 20-yard touchdown rush by Dillard. FAU had two more possessions to try and take the lead, but Hankerson threw a pick on one and the team turned the ball over on downs on the other.

Rice won despite gaining just 273 yards of offense and converting a meager 3- of-16 third down attempts.
