Recap: BYU vs. Georgia Tech

Provo, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Taysom Hill threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the BYU Cougars captured a convincing 38-20 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in non-conference action at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Hill converted 19-of-27 passes for 244 yards and survived three sacks while also producing a game-high 87 yards rushing on 12 carries for the Cougars (4-2) as they notched their third win in a row.

Georgia Tech (3-3), which has lost three straight outings, was led by Vad Lee who converted 7-of-20 pass attempts for 132 yards, although he was sacked four times and intercepted once. Backup quarterback Justin Thomas connected on all three of his passes for 26 yards and a score.

Hill went to the air for the first score of the game, combining with Cody Hoffman on a 45-yard TD less than five minutes into the opening quarter to give the Cougars a 7-0 advantage. BYU added a two-yard TD run by Jamaal Williams later in the first, but not before Tech came up with a two-yard TD run by Lee.

Hoffman, one of the most accomplished receivers in BYU history, finished with five catches for a game-high 99 yards. He is now tied with Dennis Pitta for the career lead in receptions for the Cougars with 221.

Trailing by a score of 14-7, the Yellow Jackets closed the gap early in the second quarter thanks to a 37-yard field goal by Harrison Butker. The kicker also converted a 44-yard effort with less than a minute remaining in the half, but that was only after BYU kicker Justin Sorensen made good on a 23-yard effort of his own and Hill cleared the goal line on a one-yard run to give the Cougars a 24-13 advantage at the break.

Following a scoreless third frame, the Cougars tallied two more touchdowns to put even more distance between themselves and Georgia Tech as Alani Fua returned an interception 51 yards for a score and Algernon Brown logged a 15- yard TD run to give the hosts a 38-13 edge.

The Yellow Jackets had one last gasp late in the contest when Thomas hit Deon Hill with a five-yard touchdown pass, but by then it was too little, too late.

Tech is now just 1-5 versus teams from the state of Beehive State, including an overtime loss to Utah in the 2011 Sun Bowl.
