Recap: Western Ky vs. Kentucky

Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers rushed for 216 yards and four touchdowns as they took down the Kentucky Wildcats, 35-26, in a non-conference, neutral-site bout at LP Field.

Antonio Andrews had 99 rushing yards, 37 receiving yards and a touchdown for WKU (1-0), which defeated the Wildcats for the second straight season. Leon Allen ran for 92 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries, and Keshawn Simpson (34 yards) had two short touchdown runs. Brandon Doughty had a solid outing in his debut as the starting quarterback, completing 27-of-34 passes for 271 yards, throwing a touchdown to Mitchell Henry (six receptions, 65 yards).

For Kentucky (0-1), Jalen Whitlow was 10-of-15 passing for 78 yards and ran for an extra 75 yards and a touchdown before being relieved for Maxwell Smith (8-of-13, 125 yards, TD). Raymond Sanders was solid on the ground, gaining 98 yards on 14 carries.

WKU marched down the field on the game's opening drive, capping it off with a three-yard touchdown run from Simpson to go up, 7-0.

The Wildcats drove deep into WKU territory later in the first quarter but had to settle for a 22-yard field goal off the foot of Joe Mansour.

The Hilltoppers extended their lead early in the second quarter when Andrews ran in a touchdown from three yards out, capping off a 12-play, 80-yard drive.

UK wasted little time cutting into its deficit, however, as Whitlow scrambled for a 19-yard score less than two minutes later.

WKU gave itself some more breathing room midway through the second quarter, going up 21-10 following another three-yard touchdown rush by Simpson. The seesaw continued a few minutes later as Jonathan George rushed in a five-yard touchdown to cut the Wildcats' deficit to just four, 21-17, heading into halftime.

The Hilltoppers added to their lead late in the third quarter when Doughty tossed his first-career touchdown pass, a nine-yard strike to Henry. They further distanced themselves early in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard touchdown rush by Allen.

The Wildcats added 10 unanswered points later in the fourth quarter to make the final score close. Mansour connected on a 30-yard field goal and Smith hooked up with Demarco Robinson on a 34-yard touchdown pass.

WKU held a 10-minute time of possession advantage over UK.
