Recap: Auburn vs. Arkansas State

Auburn, AL (Sports Network) - Gus Malzahn earned a win against his former team as his Auburn Tigers defeated the Arkansas State Red Wolves, 38-9, in a non- league tussle at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Malzahn was the head coach at Arkansas State (1-1) last season but returned to Auburn (2-0), where he was an offensive coordinator from 2009-11, to take the head coaching job after Gene Chizik was let go this past offseason.

Nick Marshall threw for 147 yards and two touchdowns while completing 10-of-17 pass attempts for Auburn. Cameron Artis-Payne rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries while Tre Mason had 99 yards and a score on 14 attempts. The Tigers rushed for 301 yards as a team.

Arkansas State was led by Adam Kennedy, who threw for 272 yards on 29-of-41 passing and also rushed for 74 yards. David Oku had six catches for 70 yards.

Malzahn's squad scored on its drive of the game when Marshall threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Davis.

A 34-yard field goal from Brian Davis accounted for the Red Wolves' first points of the game.

The Tigers responded with another touchdown, this time on a 17-yard run from Corey Grant, as they extended their lead to 14-3.

Marshall threw his second touchdown pass of the game with just over two minutes left before the half on a 68-yard strike to Sammie Coates.

A pair of Davis field goals early in the third quarter, one from 21 yards out and the other from 42, cut the Auburn lead to 21-9.

The Tigers would push their lead to 28-9 before the end of the third quarter with an 11-yard touchdown run from Mason.

Cody Parkey connected on a 35-yard field goal with under nine minutes to play as Auburn claimed a 31-9 lead.

The final score of the matchup for Auburn came when Artis-Payne scored on an 12-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
