Recap: Western Mich vs. Connecticut

Kalamazoo, MI (Sports Network) - Desmond Bozeman's fumble return for a touchdown turned out to be the difference for Western Michigan as the Broncos downed the Connecticut Huskies, 30-24, at Waldo Stadium.

Alex Carder completed 18-of-34 passes for 237 yards and a touchdown for Western Michigan (2-2). Jaime Wilson (eight receptions, 100 yards) and Josh Schaffer (six receptions, 104 yards, TD) were Carder's primary targets on the day. Dareyon Chance finished with 66 yards rushing and a score to lead the team.

Chandler Whitmer threw for 333 yards and three scores but also threw an interception for Connecticut (2-2) and was sacked six times. Geremy Davis caught nine passes for 123 yards and a score and Lyle McCombs racked up 119 yards on the ground.

Western Michigan settled for a field goal on its first drive of the game with Andrew Haldeman connecting on a 44-yard attempt.

The first touchdown of the contest came in the second quarter when Antoin Scriven ran the ball in from a yard out to push the Broncos lead to 10-0. That lead was extended to 17-0 later in the frame on a nine-yard TD run by Chance.

Connecticut finally responded with a nine-yard passing touchdown from Whitmer to Ryan Griffin. The score capped a 12-play, 66-yard drive by the Huskies and left the visitors trailing at the break, 17-7.

Carder connected with Schaffer for a 30-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter to further extend the Broncos' lead.

Whitmer threw his second touchdown of the game with a two-yard strike to John Delahunt with 4:15 left in the third quarter. The Huskies inched even closer with a 32-yard field goal by Chad Christen with 8:47 to play in the fourth quarter.

After forcing a three-and-out on WMU's next possession, the Huskies had a chance to even up the score until Bozeman returned a Whitmer fumble 53 yards for a touchdown. After a missed extra point the Broncos led 30-17.

A seven-yard touchdown pass from Whitmer to Davis with 54 seconds left on the clock brought the Huskies to within six, 30-24, but Connecticut was unable to recover the ensuing onside kick, allowing WMU to hold on for the win.

UConn led the nation in tackles for loss (10.67 pg) entering the game but recorded only two against Western Michigan.
