Recap: Duke vs. Memphis

Durham, NC (Sports Network) - Sean Renfree threw for 314 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Duke Blue Devils to a 38-14 win over the Memphis Tigers in non-conference action at Wallace Wade Stadium.

Renfree converted 26-of-37 passes and was picked off once as the Blue Devils (3-1) registered their second straight win. Conner Vernon reeled in eight passes for a game-high 120 yards and a couple of scores for the hosts.

The Tigers (0-4) generated just 152 yards of total offense, a far cry from the 350.3 ypg they were averaging through the first three games of the season. Jacob Karam converted 13-of-22 passes for 81 yards, but was sacked four times which brought the team's net rushing total down to just 71 yards.

Following a scoreless first quarter, the Tigers put the first points on the board when Wynton McManis returned an interception four yards for a touchdown four seconds into the second frame.

On their ensuing possession, the Blue Devils drove 79 yards on nine plays, capped by a four-yard TD run by Brandon Connette to knot the score at 7-7.

Less than a minute later Memphis moved back in front thanks to a two-yard TD run by Tevin Jones, but those proved to be the final points of the afternoon for the visitors.

Duke kicker Ross Martin began a run of 31 unanswered points for the hosts with a 23-yard field goal at the 7:01 mark of the second quarter. A 37-yard TD pass from Renfree to Vernon three minutes later pushed the Blue Devils ahead for good at 17-14.

In the third quarter Renfree hooked up with Desmond Scott on a 16-yard TD strike and in the fourth the signal-caller tossed scoring passes of eight and 31 yards to Connette and Vernon, respectively, to cap the days scoring run.

Duke, which entered the week ranked 111th in the nation in rushing with just 94.7 ypg, finished with 177 on 44 attempts.

Memphis entered the week with the third-longest losing streak in the nation at seven games.
