Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Running back Rushel Shell, who announced his intention to transfer from Pitt to UCLA, has been denied in his effort to return to the Panthers.

The Post-Gazette on Monday quoted a source close to the team, who revealed that Pitt coaches have shot down any chance of reinstating the Pittsburgh-area native.

Shell rushed for 641 yards and four touchdowns during his successful freshman campaign in 2012, but announced in April that he wanted to leave school and head to the west coast.

The Panthers blocked his attempts to transfer to both Arizona and Arizona State, according to the paper, after giving Shell time away from spring practices.

Shell set state rushing records by racking up 9,078 total yards over four years at Hopewell High School in Aliquippa.
