South Bend, IN (Sports Network) - Notre Dame and head football coach Brian Kelly have agreed to a contract extension through the 2017 season.

The announcement came in the press conference following the Fighting Irish's season-opening win over Temple.

"I just wanted to take a minute...to say how thrilled we are that on a day where our head football coach becomes one of the youngest coaches in history to achieve the 200 win milestone, that we can also announce that we have entered into a new agreement that ensures that Brian will continue to provide the leadership that has fundamentally changed this program, restored it, given it the foundation that it needs for continued success in the future," Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said.

In his first three seasons at the helm, Kelly has led the Irish to a 28-6 record, including a perfect 12-0 regular season last year that ended in a blowout loss to Alabama in the BCS national title game.
