Annapolis, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Navy freshman slot back Will McKamey passed away Tuesday while in a coma at a Baltimore-area hospital. He was 19 years old.

McKamey was hospitalized Saturday after collapsing during spring football practice and was flown via Medevac to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Unit, where he died Tuesday with his family at his bedside.

"We are all so very heartbroken by the death of Midshipman Will McKamey," Naval Academy superintendent VADM Mike Miller said in a statement. "This is devastating news for his family, his classmates, his teammates and the entire Naval Academy family. We offer our deepest condolences to Will's family, friends and shipmates in the wake of this tragedy."

McKamey, who was named Mr. Football for the state of Tennessee as a senior in high school, was an Oceanography major in Third Company at the Naval Academy.

"Our deepest and most sincere condolences go out to their entire family and friends," Navy head football coach Ken Niumatalolo said. "As our Navy football family mourns the loss of one of our brothers, we also celebrate and honor his life. He loved his family, his friends and his teammates. The Brotherhood loves you! Keep the ball 'high and tight' in Heaven."

Funeral arrangements for McKamey are pending and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
