McLean, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kentucky, which finished last season unranked, has been voted the top team in the preseason USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll.

The Wildcats received 16 first-place votes and a total of 767 points from a nationwide panel of coaches. Kentucky went 21-12 and was knocked out in the first round of the NIT by Robert Morris last season.

This marks the first time in the history of the USA Today Sports coaches' poll, which began in the 1991-92 season, that a team enters a season No. 1 after finishing the previous season unranked.

Michigan State is second in the poll and received three first-place votes. The Spartans lost to Duke in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Defending national champion Louisville received 10 first-place votes and was ranked third. The Cardinals, who beat Michigan in the national championship game, will compete in the American Athletic Conference this season before entering the ACC next year.

Duke and Arizona round out the top five. Kansas is sixth in the preseason poll and is followed by Syracuse, Florida, Michigan and Ohio State.

The second 10 consists of North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Memphis, Gonzaga, Virginia Commonwealth, Wichita State, Marquette, Oregon, Connecticut and New Mexico. The last five teams ranked are Wisconsin, Notre Dame, UCLA, Indiana and Virginia.
