Recap: Monmouth vs. Iona

West Long Branch, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by Sean Armand with 22 points, the Iona Gaels downed the Monmouth Hawks, 89-71, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tilt at the MAC.

For the Gaels (13-8, 10-2 MAAC), winners of five-straight, David Laury posted a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds, Isaiah Williams finished with 17 points and seven rebounds, and A.J. English scored 14 with five assists.

Andrew Nicholas led the Hawks (10-13, 4-8) with 15 points. Deon Jones added 14 points and nine boards, and Max DiLeo chipped in with 12 points.

Iona hit on 45.5 percent of its field goal tries in the first half, including 5-of-19 from beyond the arc. Trailing by three midway through the first, the Gaels used an 18-3 run to build a double-digit lead late in the half and take a 40-33 advantage into halftime. Monmouth shot 40.5 percent from the field in the first half and missed all but one of its seven tries from 3-point range.

After the break, the Hawks struggled from the field, making just 32.4 percent of their field goal tries and again having trouble from deep, connecting on only 2-of-10 from beyond the arc. The Gaels had no such troubles, knocking down 5-of-12 from 3-point distance, as part of a 64.3 percent shooting performance after the intermission. Iona pushed its lead to as many as 19 in the second half as the Gaels coasted to victory.

Iona had a distinct advantage on the perimeter, outscoring the Hawks from beyond the arc, 30-9. Monmouth did have a 46-38 advantage in points in the paint.
