Recap: Northern Iowa vs. Southern Ill

St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by a team-high 23 points, 11 rebounds and six steals from Desmar Jackson, the sixth-seeded Southern Illinois Salukis withstood a late rally to upset the third-seeded Northern Iowa Panthers, 63-58, in a quarterfinal game of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament at the Scottrade Center.

Anthony Beane added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Salukis (14-18), who now advance to Saturday's semifinals to play Indiana State.

For the Panthers (16-15), Seth Tuttle posted a double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds, while Nate Buss added 10 points and eight boards.

SIU shot 48.1 percent from the field in the opening period, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range. Leading by three, 21-18, with under six minutes to play in the period, the Salukis ended the half on a 15-0 run as they doubled up the Panthers at the break, 36-18. SIU held UNI to just 21.4 percent shooting from the field, as the Panthers missed all but one of their 10 3-point tries in the half.

The Panthers mounted their comeback bid by shooting 48.3 percent from the field after halftime, but still had trouble from deep, hitting on just 3-of-12 from beyond the arc. The Salukis hit the wall after halftime, making a mere 31 percent of their field goal tries, including a woeful 1-of-9 from 3-point distance. Trailing by 11, 52-41 with under six minutes to play in regulation, the Panthers ran off 11-straight points to tie the game at 52-52 with 3:32 left on the clock. The Salukis answered with a 5-0 run to go back ahead and were able to hold on down the stretch to escape with the victory.

The Salukis committed 12 turnovers on the night and forced 17 miscues by the Panthers. UNI had the advantage in the frontcourt, outscoring SIU in the paint, 30-24, and winning the battle on the boards, 45-35.
