Recap: Valparaiso vs. Ill-Chicago

Valparaiso, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Alec Peters tallied 29 points and eight rebounds, as the fourth-seeded Valparaiso Crusaders held off the ninth-seeded Illinois-Chicago Flames in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament, 73-63, at the Athletics-Recreation Center.

Peters shot 10-of-11 from the field and finished just one point shy of his career high for Valparaiso (18-14), which will take on eighth-seeded Detroit in the second round on Friday. LaVonte Dority chipped in 12 points for the hosts.

For UIC (6-25), Marc Brown netted 16 points, Jordan Harks (14 points) and Kelsey Barlow (11) each collected nine rebounds and Jay Parker scored 10.

Valparaiso opened up a comfortable 39-28 lead at intermission after shooting a lofty 56 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. UIC, meanwhile, shot a mere 35.7 percent in the first stanza.

The Crusaders' lead swelled to as many as 14 early in the second half. The Flames made a run and brought their deficit to just four, 58-54, with 6:19 to play, but they would get no closer.

UIC finished the game shooting just 36.5 percent from the field and were also plagued by a game-high 15 turnovers.
