Recap: Detroit vs. Valparaiso

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Lexus Williams scored 22 points and LaVonte Dority poured in 20 to lead the Valparaiso Crusaders to a 78-70 triumph over the Detroit Titans in a Horizon League bout at Calihan Hall.

Williams and Dority combined to shoot 23-of-28 from the free-throw line for Valpo (10-9, 2-2 Horizon). Jubril Adekoya tallied 11 points and nine rebounds, while Bobby Capobianco netted 10 points off the bench.

For Detroit (8-11, 1-3), losers of three straight, Juwan Howard, Jr. registered a career-high 35 points on 13-of-23 from the field. Matthew Grant and Evan Bruinsma chipped in 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Detroit led by seven with under four minutes to play in the first half but saw that advantage dwindle to just one, 31-30, before the halftime buzzer sounded. Valpo shot 40 percent from the floor in the opening stanza but just 1-of-7 from 3-point range, while Detroit shot 35.5 percent (5-of-16 from beyond the arc).

A Williams layup with 13:54 left gave the Crusaders a 45-43 lead and they never surrendered that advantage down the stretch. They put the Titans away in the final minute by draining 7-of-8 at the foul line, capping off a stellar 36-of-44 showing on the night.

Valpo overcame a game-high 19 turnovers by winning the rebounding battle, 36-27.
