Recap: Iona vs. Fairfield

New Rochelle, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - A.J. English scored a game-high 25 points, leading three players in double figures, as the Iona Gaels captured an 84-75 win over the Fairfield Stags in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at the Hynes Athletic Center.

Tre Bowman accounted for 24 points, shooting 6-of-8 behind the 3-point line, and David Laury 21 for the Gaels (7-7, 4-1 MAAC) as they picked up their second win in the last three outings.

Still winless in conference play after six tries, the Stags (3-13, 0-6) were paced by Maurice Barrow with 19 points, followed by Sean Grennan with 16 and both Justin Jenkins and Coleman Johnson with 12 points in the team's fourth consecutive setback.

Both teams shot the ball well from the field in the first half, but even with 55.2 percent accuracy the Stags found themselves trailing at the break, 46-38. Iona connected on 50.0 percent from the floor and an even more impressive 7- of-10 behind the 3-point line through the first 20 minutes.

In the second half both teams dipped to below 45.0 percent from the field, but as Fairfield converted 44.8 percent overall in the period, the team's effort out on the perimeter fell from 4-of-8 in the first half to just 2-of-9, allowing the hosts to come away with the nine-point victory.

In addition to outscoring the visitors by a 23-11 margin at the free-throw line, the Gaels also forced 15 turnovers and traded those in for another 16 points.
