Recap: Canisius vs. Niagara

Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Billy Baron poured in 31 points as the Canisius Golden Griffins coasted to an 87-74 victory over the Niagara Purple Eagles in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tilt at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Baron knocked down 10-of-17 shots from the floor and sank 7-of-8 at the charity stripe for Canisius (13-7, 7-2 MAAC) as it improved to 7-0 at home on the season. Chris Perez netted 19 points while Chris Manhertz posted a double- double with 14 points and 11 boards.

Antoine Mason, who entered the contest leading the nation in scoring at 27.6 ppg, once again led the Purple Eagles (5-15, 2-7) with 29 points on 11-of-19 efficiency from the floor. Marvin Jordan added 19 points, Rayvon Harris had 10 points and Marcus Ware pulled down 10 boards.

The Golden Griffins jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they went into the intermission with a 45-31 advantage on the scoreboard. Canisius sank an even 50 percent of its field goal attempts in the first half while limiting the visitors to just 40 percent shooting from the floor.

Niagara heated up to sink 53.1 percent of its field goal tries including 7- of-11 from 3-point range in the second stanza. Canisius converted 19-of-21 attempts at the free-throw line after the break to keep the Purple Eagles at bay.

Despite the loss, Niagara enjoyed a 36-33 edge in the rebounding battle.
