Recap: Western Ill vs. Nebraska Omaha

Macomb, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Garret Covington scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the Western Illinois Leathernecks escaped an overtime battle, 79-72, with the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks in Summit League play at Western Hall.

Adam Link netted 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting for the Leathernecks (7-9, 1-0 Summit). Tate Stensgaard scored 12 and grabbed 11 rebounds for the double- double, but committed six turnovers in the win. Jabari Sandifer contributed 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting to round out the WIU double-digit scorers. The Leathernecks have won two of their last three games.

John Karhoff scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Nebraska Omaha (10-6, 0-1). He shot 8-of-13 from the floor and hit 9-of-10 free-throw attempts in the loss. Marcus Tyus scored 15 points and Devin Patterson netted 10 with four assists and six steals. The Mavericks have lost two in a row.

WIU shot 31.8 percent from the floor in the first half, missing all four 3- point attempts. It was worse for Omaha, as the Mavericks hit 6-of-30 from the floor in the first 20 minutes (.200).

The Leathernecks turned it around in the second frame, connecting on 60.7 percent from the floor, which was only slightly better than Omaha's second half. The Mavericks improved to an even 60 percent from the field, and hit 7- of-8 from the charity stripe.

Remy Roberts-Burnett hit a jumper with 11 seconds left in the second half to force the overtime period. The Leathernecks connected on 3-of-6 shots from the field in extra time, and made 12-of-16 from the free-throw line to down the visiting Mavericks.

WIU had the advantage in bench points, 22-13, and at the free-throw line, 22-15. The Leathernecks did turn the ball over 21 times, losing the points off turnovers battle, 29-16.
