Recap: Detroit vs. Stony Brook
Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Jameel Warney recorded a double-double with career-highs of 32 points and 21 rebounds as the Stony Brook Seawolves defeated the Detroit Titans, 104-102, in a thrilling triple-overtime bout to conclude 2K Sports Classic subregional action at Calihan Hall.
Warney was 13-of-14 from the field and grabbed 11 offensive rebounds for the Seawolves (5-2). Anthony Jackson added a 24-point, seven-rebound, six-assist performance of his own while Carson Puriefoy managed 16 points and Dave Coley tallied 14.
Detroit (3-4) was led by career-high performances from Evan Bruinsma (32 points) and Juwan Howard Jr. (25 points). Bruinsma was 20-of-22 from the free- throw line and grabbed 14 rebounds to secure a double-double. Howard Jr. dished out a game-high seven assists while Carlton Brundidge scored 19 points and Matthew Grant managed 11.
Detroit led 39-32 at halftime after shooting 48.1 percent from the field in the first half, while knocking down six 3-pointers.
Stony Brook rallied in the second half as it shot 45.5 percent from the floor and hit 10-of-12 free-throws. Trailing by three points with the final seconds of regulation ticking off the clock, Jackson hit a buzzer- beating 3-pointer to tie the game at 75-75 and send it to overtime.
Stony Brook led by as many as four points in the first overtime but clutch free throws from Bruinsma with 20 seconds left tied the game at 81-81 and sent it to a second overtime.
Detroit led by five with 1:27 left in the second overtime but the Seawolves came rumbling back again and with nine seconds left, Warney made a layup to even the game at 94-94. After Howard Jr. missed a potential game-winning 3- pointer, the game was sent to a third overtime.
The third and final overtime period was back and forth but with five seconds left, Warney grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed Jackson jumper and put in the layup to give Stony Brook a 104-102 lead. Once again, Howard Jr. put up a potential game-winning 3-pointer but it was no good as the Seawolves took the win.
