DeKalb, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - A three-point play by CJ Carter late in the second half put Nebraska Omaha on top as the Mavericks held on to defeat Northern Illinois, 68-66, in non-conference play at the Convocation Center.

Carter finished the meeting with a game-high 18 points, converting all but two of his 11 attempts at the charity stripe in the win for the Mavericks (1-0). Marcus Tyus chipped in nine points in 19 minutes off the bench for the visitors.

The Huskies (0-1) were paced by Darrell Bowie with 16 points, followed by Daveon Balls with 13 in a reserve role.

In the second half the Huskies had their issues from the field with only 35.7 percent accuracy as they missed all six of their attempts on the perimeter, allowing Omaha to battle back and pull out the victory in the final moments.

The Mavericks outscored the hosts 27-15 at the free-throw line.
