Henniger made every shot he took for the Golden Flashes (6-1), shooting 6-of-6 from the field and 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. K.K. Simmons (18 points), Kris Brewer (16), Devareaux Manley (14) and Darren Goodson (10) provided the bulk of the remaining Kent State offense.

Antoine Mason recorded a game-high 31 points for the Purple Eagles (1-4) on 12-of-20 from the field. Ramone Snowden scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Rayvon Harris added 10 points.

The teams remained deadlocked through the first half of play, with Golden Flashes taking the advantage from the perimeter, where they hit half of their 10 attempts. At halftime, they claimed a slim 44-43 lead.

In the second half, Kent State was again able to shoot slightly better from the field, putting together a run midway through the half that gave them a 12- point lead. The Golden Flashes would hang onto that lead until the end of the game.

Kent State shot an impressive 60.7 percent from the field, while the Purple Eagles managed to shoot 47.1 percent. Still, Niagara kept the game close by winning both the rebounding (34-30) and turnover (11-9) battles.
