Kent, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Kris Brewer made a go-ahead free-throw attempt with three seconds remaining to lift the Kent State Golden Flashes to a 79-78 decision over the USC Upstate Spartans in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at the M.A.C. Center.

Brewer went 1-of-7 from the field and missed front end of his late trip to the charity stripe before coming up clutch to help the Golden Flashes (5-1) win their 10th game in a row at home. Devareaux Manley scored a team-high 21 points while Derek Jackson chipped in 15 points and a pair of steals. Darren Goodson tallied 12 points, six rebounds and six assists for Kent State.

Torrey Craig paced the Spartans (2-3) with 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the floor. Ty Greene added 20 points and six assists. Ricardo Glenn registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards while Jodd Maxey scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field.

The Golden Flashes converted 51.9 percent of their field goal tries including 11-of-18 from 3-point range in the opening stanza to take a 42-34 lead into the intermission. USC Upstate assisted 12 of its 14 made shots from the floor in the first half to stay within striking distance.

The Spartans heated up after the break to hit on 60.7 percent of their field goal attempts including 7-of-11 from behind the 3-point line. Kent State shot only 35.7 percent from the field, but continued to light up the score from the perimeter with a 7-of-16 clip from 3-point range. Craig completed a traditional three-point play with 16 seconds remaining in regulation to even the score at 78. After Brewer put the Golden Flashes back in front by one, Glenn missed a jumper as time expired.

Despite the loss, USC Upstate held a 33-26 edge in the rebounding battle and outscored the Golden Flashes, 32-10, in the paint. 18-of-24 of Kent State's made field goal attempts came from behind the 3-point line, which set a new school-record for points scored from beyond the arc in a single game.
