Recap: Detroit vs. Rhode Island

Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Juwan Howard, Jr. finished with 17 points and eight rebounds as the Detroit Titans held off the Rhode Island Rams to a 70-68 decision in a non-conference tilt at Calihan Hall.

Evan Bruinsma chipped in 15 points for Detroit (5-5) as it climbed back to the .500 mark. Matthew Grant gave the Titans a spark off the bench with 11 points.

Xavier Munford led the Rams (6-5) with 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the floor. Gilvydas Biruta registered a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. E.C. Matthews added 12 points for URI.

The Rams shot 44.8 percent from the field and outrebounded the hosts, 32-18, in the first half. Detroit went into halftime trailing, 32-27, after it was limited to 36.4 percent shooting from the floor including a 1-of-8 clip from behind the 3-point line in the opening period.

The Titans heated up to knock down 51.7 percent of their field goal attempts and converted 13-of-15 shots at the free-throw line in the second half. URI hit on 48.3 percent of its shots from the floor after halftime. Grant made a pair of attempts at the charity stripe with 1:13 left in regulation to give Detroit a 69-65 lead. The Rams narrowed the deficit to one point as Matthews hit a jumper and Biruta made a free throw. Bruinsma made 1-of-2 at the free- throw line to make it a two-point game before URI's Biggie Minnis missed a jumper as time expired.

Detroit outscored the Rams, 46-34, in the paint and also, 16-7, in second chance points in the contest.
