Recap: La Salle vs. Manhattan

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - George Beamon scored 24 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the Manhattan Jaspers survived two overtime periods in order to claim a 99-90 win over the La Salle Explorers in non- conference action at Tom Gola Arena.

Beamon, who made good on all nine of his attempts at the free-throw line, converted just 3-of-11 beyond the arc and was 6-of-20 from the floor overall for the Jaspers (1-0). Michael Alvarado contributed 16 points, eight boards and a team-best six assists, followed by Emmy Andujar and Rhamel Brown with 14 points apiece and Shane Richards 13 off the bench. Andujar also accounted for a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Explorers (0-1) were paced by Tyrone Garland who scored a game-high 28 points, although he shot just 7-of-20 from the field before fouling out. Tyreek Duren accounted for 17 points and nine assists, Jerrell Wright 16 points and Sam Mills 15 in 48 minutes of action.

La Salle led by as many as seven points in the first half, even as it shot just 3-of-12 beyond the arc in the frame, and managed to cling to a 32-30 edge at the break.

After knocking down 5-of-13 from the outside through the first 20 minutes of action, the Jaspers continued their assault from the outside in the second half, converting 6-of-12, but it was a 3-pointer by La Salle's Garland that locked the score at 73-73 with under 10 seconds remaining in regulation.

In the first overtime session points were hard to come by and while Garland was able to put the hosts up by three, 80-77, at the 1:23 mark, Brown countered late with a layup for Manhattan to send the meeting into another overtime tied at 81-81.

With just over three minutes to play the Explorers clung to an 86-85 edge, but from there Manhattan took over and ran away with the victory.

The Jaspers survived 19 turnovers by producing a huge 51-33 advantage on the glass, while limiting the hosts to only 6-of-19 shooting behind the 3-point line.
