Recap: Jacksonville St vs. Tenn-Martin

Jacksonville, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by 22 points from Darion Rackley, the Jacksonville State Gamecocks downed the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks, 70-65, in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both clubs at the Pete Mathews Coliseum.

For the Gamecocks (7-9, 1-0 OVC), Brian Williams added 16 points and six assists and Nick Cook chipped in with 10 points.

Marshun Newell led the Skyhawks (5-11, 0-1) with 21 points, while Terence Smith finished with 14 and Myles Taylor scored 12.

JSU shot 36 percent from the floor, missing all four of its 3-point attempts in the opening period. UTM hit on 43.8 percent of its shots, including 5-of-13 from beyond the arc, giving it a 37-29 lead at intermission.

The Gamecocks improved their shooting from the field to 50 percent after halftime, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. The Skyhawks struggled with their efficiency, hitting just 38.1 percent of their field goal attempts in the second. Trailing by as many as eight points after halftime, the Gamecocks used a late run to take the lead for good with just under four minutes to play, but the Skyhawks continued to battle. Trailing 68-65 in the final seconds, UTM held possession looking for a game-winning 3-point attempt, but Williams stole the ball and took it the length of the floor for a dunk as time expired, sealing the win for the Gamecocks.

JSU outscored UTM in the paint, 38-28. The Gamecocks also finished with a 21-13 scoring advantage from the free-throw line.
