Recap: Old Dominion vs. Rice

Norfolk, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Richard Ross recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, helping his Old Dominion Monarchs edge out the Rice Owls, 55-51, in Conference USA action at the Constant Convocation Center.

Ross connected on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor for Old Dominion (13-14, 7-5 C-USA). Aaron Bacote chipped in 13 points of his own, hitting 5-of-8 from the free-throw line, and Keenan Palmore grabbed 10 rebounds with a team-high four assists. The Monarchs have won two of their last three games.

Sean Obi notched a double-double of his own with 11 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for Rice (7-18, 2-10). Max Guercy scored 10 points in the loss, which was the third in a row for the Owls.

Old Dominion connected on 42.4 percent of its field goal tries in the first half, but went just 2-of-11 from 3-point range. Still, the Monarchs took a 32-25 lead into the intermission after Rice hit just 37.5 percent of its shot attempts in the frame.

The Monarchs dropped their shooting percentage down to 31.8 in the second half, not helped by 1-of-11 shooting from deep. But the Owls could only match that, hitting an identical 31.8 percent in the period, only making a three- point dent in the ODU lead.

Old Dominion had the advantage in points in the paint, 33-19, and in second chance points, 13-2. The Monarchs dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Owls 43-31.
