Recap: South Alabama vs. Western Ky
Mobile, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Harrison-Docks hit a game winning shot with 4.3 seconds left in the game to lift the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers to a 58-56 win over the South Alabama Jaguars at the Mitchell Center in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both sides.
T.J. Price led the Hilltoppers (9-5, 1-0 SBC) with 19 points. George Fant recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Harrison-Docks came off the bench to contribute 11 points and a team-high four assists.
Mychal Ammons paced the Jaguars (6-8, 0-1) with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. Antoine Allen scored 10 and Augustine Rubit notched 10 points and nine rebounds. The Jaguars shot 41.8 percent from the field for the game and their defense held the Hilltoppers to just 35.8 percent shooting, but WKU had 12 more field goal attempts for the game.
The first half was well contested throughout, with neither team having more than a four-point lead, and ended with the Hilltoppers up 27-25. Both teams shot under 36 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of the bout.
In the second half, the Jaguars jumped out with a 10-0 run to go up 35-27, but the Hilltoppers would slowly retake control. Antoine Allen hit a 3-pointer with just under two minutes remaining in the game to give the Jaguars a 54-53 lead, but Harrison-Docks responded with a triple of his own to put the Hilltoppers back on top, 56-54. Ammons then tied the game up at 56 with 34 seconds remaining before Harrison-Docks sealed the decision.
There were 10 ties and nine lead changes in the contest, which puts the overall series record for the two teams 33-32 in the Jaguars favor.Game Notes
