Recap: Texas-Arlington vs. Arkansas State

Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Ed Townsel shot 7-of-8 from the field for 20 points to lead the Arkansas State Red Wolves past the Texas-Arlington Mavericks, 82-66, in Sun Belt Conference action at College Park Center.

Townsel was a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point range for ASU (8-4, 1-0 Sun Belt), which has won three in a row. Kirk Van Slyke (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Kendrick Washington (12 points, 10 rebounds) both tallied double-doubles, Cameron Golden posted 15 points and seven assists, while Brandon Reed netted 12 points.

For UTA (5-8, 0-1), Reger Dowell led all scorers with 28 points, doing so on 9-of-21 from the field, including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. Lonnie McClanahan was the only other player in double figures with 12 points.

Although ASU outshot UTA from the field in the first half, 42.9 percent to 32.3 percent, the Mavericks outscored the Red Wolves from the free-throw line, 11-3. The teams went into halftime deadlocked at 32.

The Red Wolves asserted themselves in a big way after halftime, shooting a lofty 73.9 percent from the field. A 24-2 run in the second stanza allowed ASU to pull away.

ASU shot 10-of-23 from 3-point range on the evening, while UTA struggled from long distance at just 5-of-22.
