Recap: Marshall vs. Arkansas State

Huntington, WV (SportsNetwork.com) - Led by 21 points from Brandon Reed, the Arkansas State Red Wolves nipped the Marshall Thundering Herd, 83-82, in a non-league matchup at the Cam Henderson Center.

For the Red Wolves (6-4), Melvin Johnson III and Kirk Van Slyke each added 16 points, Cameron Golden chipped in with 13 and Kendrick Washington posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Kareem Canty led the Thundering Herd (5-7) with 22 points, while TyQuane Goard registered a double-double of his own with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Chris Thomas added 14 points and Ryan Taylor had 13.

ASU ran out to a 19-5 lead to start the game and took a 47-31 advantage into intermission. The Red Wolves connected on 51.6 percent of their field goal tries and drained 10-of-19 from beyond the arc in the opening period. Marshall struggled at the outset, making only 29.7 percent of its shots from the field, including just 3-of-12 from 3-point range.

After halftime, the Thundering Herd had more success from the field, hitting on 48.5 percent of their shots including 7-of-19 from 3-point range. ASU cooled off somewhat in the second half, shooting 41.9 percent and only 2-of-12 from 3-point distance.

Trailing 72-58 with under nine minutes to play, the Thundering Herd used an 11-0 run get back in the game. They were able to finally tie it at 79-79 with 41 seconds remaining but Reed knocked down a 3-pointer 16 seconds later to put the Red Wolves up for good.

Both squads had trouble at the free-throw line, with Marshall making just 18 on its 26 attempts and ASU hitting on just 13-of-23 from the charity stripe. Each team turned the ball over just 10 times.
