Recap: Rice vs. FIU

Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Tymell Murphy tallied 22 points and 15 rebounds to lead the FIU Panthers to a 71-60 victory over the Rice Owls in Conference USA action at Tudor Fieldhouse.

Murphy shot 9-of-15 from the field and added a pair of blocks for FIU (9-7, 1-0 C-USA), which snapped three-game losing streak. Dennis Mavin narrowly missed a double-double with 16 points and nine boards.

For Rice (5-9, 0-1), which has lost four in a row, Austin Ramljak poured in 14 points.

FIU outshot Rice from the field in the first half, 50 percent to 40 percent, but managed to take just a one-point lead into intermission, 33-32. The Owls kept the game close by shooting 5-of-14 from 3-point range.

After Rice took a brief one-point lead with 6:43 remaining following a Max Guercy 3-pointer, the Panthers ran off six consecutive points to pull away and shot 4-of-4 at the foul line in the final minute to put the game on ice.

In a game with 16 ties and nine lead changes, both teams turned the ball over just six times.
