Recap: Charlotte vs. Davidson
Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Tom Droney scored 21 points as the Davidson Wildcats beat the Charlotte 49ers in an 87-78 overtime decision to lay claim of the Hornets' Nest Trophy at Halton Arena.
Chris Czerapowicz scored 19 points for Davidson (3-5), while Jack Gibbs added 15 points and three steals off the bench.
Terrence Williams led the 49ers (6-2) with 17 points. Willie Clayton tallied a double-double with 16 points and 12 boards, followed by Ben Cherry who added 14 points. Shawn Lester chipped in 13 and Denzel Ingram had 10 points and five assists.
Both teams shot well in the first half but Davidson was able to take the 40-37 lead into the break. The Wildcats were 51.6 percent accurate from the floor and made 5-of-14 3-point shots. The 49ers knocked down 51.9 percent of their field goal attempts and 2-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Clayton tied the game up with 44 seconds left as he made a pair of free- throw attempts. With time winding down, Cherry missed a layup with three seconds left and Clayton failed on a tip-in to send the game to overtime.
Charlotte struggled in the extra period, only managing four points and one field goal, while Davidson shot 50 percent from the field and went 5-of-5 at the free-throw line.
In a game that featured 12 ties and nine lead changes, Charlotte failed to overcome 14 turnovers and a mere 3-of-16 shooting beyond the arc.Game Notes
