Recap: Missouri State vs. Illinois State
Springfield, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jarmar Gulley shot 9-of-12 from the field for a game-high 22 points, as the Missouri State Bears outlasted the Illinois State Redbirds in overtime, 78-70, in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for each teams at JQH Arena.
Marcus Marshall netted 14 points for Missouri State (11-2, 1-0 MVC), while Christian Kirk put up 13 points off the bench. Keith Pickens tallied eight points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Bears, who have won three in a row.
For Illinois State (7-6, 0-1), Daishon Knight posted 15 points and seven rebounds, Bobby Hunter poured in 11 points, and Reggie Lynch and Paris Lee scored 10 apiece.
The first half was all Illinois State, as it outshot Missouri State from the field, 58.1 percent to 37.9 percent, on its way to a 41-31 lead at the half.
The Redbirds extended their advantage to as many as 12 midway through the second half before the Bears made their run. Missouri State took its first lead of the game with 1:34 left in regulation following a pair of Pickens' free throws. Lynch stepped to the line for Illinois State with 21 seconds left with a chance to take the lead, but he made just 1-of-2 to tie the game up at 66. Marshall missed a 3-pointer as the buzzer for the Bears and the contest went to overtime.
In the extra session, Missouri State used a 6-0 run to separate itself and shot 4-of-6 from the free-throw line in the final minute to seal its fate.
Missouri State finished 17-of-25 from the charity stripe, while Illinois State was only 5-of-13.Game Notes
