Recap: Temple vs. Rutgers

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Will Cummings netted 21 points and the Temple Owls held off the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, 88-82, in American Athletic Conference action at the Liacouras Center.

Cummings also contributed eight assists for the Owls (6-13, 1-7 AAC), who put an end to their eight-game losing streak. Dalton Pepper scored 20 points and Anthony Lee and Quenton DeCosey both added 15 points.

Kadeem Jack logged 18 points to lead the Scarlet Knights (8-13, 2-6), who dropped their fourth straight. Junior Etou (14 points), J.J. Moore (13) and Myles Mack (10) also reached double figures.

The Owls got off to a very strong start, knocking down 65.6 percent of their field goal tries in the opening half, including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. At the other end, the Scarlet Knights shot 52 percent, but trailed 50-37 at the end of the half.

Rutgers shot 53.3 percent from the floor in the second half, aiming for a comeback with Temple dipping to 37 percent. The Owls hit just 1-of-9 from 3- point range in the half, but made up for it at the free-throw line, sinking 17-of-18. After claiming their largest lead of the night, by 20 points just over two minutes into the half, the Owls allowed the Knights to come all the way back and take the lead by one with 2:49 left to play. A Cummings layup just 20 seconds later, however, reclaimed the Temple lead for good.

Temple outscored Rutgers in points off turnovers (24-8) and points in the paint (42-22) in the hard-fought victory.
