Recap: Butler vs. DePaul

Indianapolis, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Cleveland Melvin tallied a season-high 30 points, helping the DePaul Blue Demons take down Big East Conference foe the Butler Bulldogs 99-94 in double overtime at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Melvin shot 10-of-14 from the field for the Blue Demons (9-8, 1-3 Big East), who broke out of a three-game losing skid. Tommy Hamilton notched a double- double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Billy Garrett and Brandon Young scored 22 and 18 points, respectively.

Kameron Woods logged a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Bulldogs (10-5, 0-3), who lost their third straight game. Kellen Dunham netted a team-high 30 points. Khyle Marshall (15 points), Erik Fromm (11) and Andrew Chrabascz (10) also reached double figures.

Both teams posted a 45.5 percent mark from the field in the first half of play. The Bulldogs, however, sank five more field goals to go up 35-32 at halftime.

The teams each improved during the second half, with DePaul shooting 63.6 percent from the field to Butler's 58.3 percent. With 20 seconds remaining, a Melvin jump shot tied the game at 73, sending the contest into overtime.

Melvin made 1-of-2 at the line with nine seconds left in the first overtime to give the Blue Demons an 87-85 lead. At the other end, Jackson Aldridge secured an offensive rebound for Butler with three seconds on the clock and put back the jumper to send the game to a second extra session.

With 1:09 left in the second overtime period, Dunham sank a 3-pointer to knot the game at 94, but these would be the last points of the game for the Bulldogs. Melvin sank the game-winning jumper with 45 seconds left, and the Blue Demons put the game on ice by shooting 3-of-4 at the free-throw line in the final 19 seconds.

Butler surrendered a 12-point advantage, which they held seven minutes into the second half, and there were seven lead changes in the thrilling game.
