University Park, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Will Barrett hit 6-of-11 3-pointers en route to a game-high 24 points, as the Princeton Tigers escaped with an 81-79 overtime victory against Penn State in non-conference action at Rec Hall.
Hans Brase added 14 points and Spencer Weisz scored 13 off the bench to help the Tigers (8-1) to their seventh straight victory. T.J. Bray had 11 points and dished out 13 assists, while backcourt mate Ben Hazel also scored 11 in the win.
D.J. Newbill and Tim Frazier tallied 24 points apiece for the Nittany Lions (8-4), who were off to their best start in five years. However, that duo also combined for 13 of PSU's 20 turnovers on the day. Ross Travis recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds in a losing effort.
The Nittany Lions had the hot hand early on, as they took a 35-23 lead into the locker room at halftime behind a 56-percent shooting effort from the floor. Princeton connected on only 9-of-25 field-goal attempts (.360) in the opening frame.
PSU led by as many as 20 with 14 minutes remaining in regulation, but the Tigers went on to make seven 3-pointers in the second half as they rallied to make it a two-point game with 16 seconds remaining. Weisz came up with a huge steal and then sank two free throws on the other end to send the game to overtime.
With PSU trailing by two late in the extra session, Frazier was sent to the foul line with five seconds left and a chance to tie it. But after making the first free throw, he missed the second and Bray grabbed the defensive rebound and was fouled. Bray proceeded to make the first and then miss his second, giving the Nittany Lions a chance to tie or take the lead with 3.7 seconds remaining. They fed the ball to a driving Frazier in the paint, but his contested layup rolled off the rim as the final buzzer sounded.
This was the first game since 1996 that the Nittany Lions played inside Rec Hall, their former home venue of 68 years.Game Notes
