Recap: Notre Dame vs. Canisius
Notre Dame, IN (SportsNetwork.com) - Eric Atkins notched a career-high 30 points and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish downed the Canisius Golden Griffins, 87-81, in overtime at the Purcell Pavilion.
Atkins shot 10-of-14 from the field for the Fighting Irish (9-4), including 6- of-8 from 3-point range. Garrick Sherman logged a double-double with 17 points on 7-of-13 from the floor and 10 rebounds. Zach Auguste contributed 12 points and eight rebounds.
Billy Baron netted a game-high 33 points for the Golden Griffins (8-5), shooting 10-of-20 from the floor and 9-of-9 from the free-throw line. Jordan Heath (13 points, 11 rebounds) and Chris Manhertz (12, 11) contributed double- doubles in the losing effort.
The teams were evenly matched in the first half, with the Fighting Irish shooting slightly better from the floor at 41.2 percent to the Golden Griffins' 38.2 percent. The Griffins, however, hit 3-of-10 from 3-point range, while the Irish could only sink 1-of-7. Canisius headed into halftime with a narrow, 33-31, lead.
Both teams improved in the second half, with Canisius shooting 55.6 percent from the field and Notre Dame shooting 51.9 percent. The Irish helped themselves at the line, however, hitting 8-of-12, where the Griffins got only 3-of-4. With just over a minute to play Baron made a layup and went to the line to complete a three-point play, which tied the game at 73 and sent it to overtime.
In the overtime period, the Griffins made just 2-of-6 from the field, while the Irish shot 3-of-5 and were a perfect 7-of-7 at the line to secure the victory.
Notre Dame outscored its opponent in the paint, 40-32, and in bench scoring, 26-12, in a close game in which the Fighting Irish's largest lead was just six points.Game Notes
