Recap: Virginia Tech vs. UNC Greensboro

Blacksburg, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Cain recorded a double-double with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds for the UNC Greensboro Spartans, who notched their first-ever win over the Virginia Tech Hokies in a 55-52 decision at Cassell Coliseum.

The Spartans (7-7) entered the matchup winless in eight tries in the all-time series, but they were able to end the drought thanks to a strong defensive effort. Kayel Locke also chipped in with 15 points.

Marshall Wood led the way with 14 points for the Hokies (7-5) who have now dropped two in a row after having their four-game winning streak snapped in last weekend's 30-point setback to VCU. Joey van Zegeren and Ben Emelogu scored 11 apiece in the loss.

Neither team shot better than 35 percent from the floor in the first half, which ended in a 22-22 tie.

While the offensive play picked up in the second stanza, ultimately it was free-throw shooting that decided the outcome. The Spartans were 12-of-14 (.857) at the foul line in the second half, while the Hokies were just 9-of-17 (.529).

VT shot just 36 percent from the floor for the game yet led by as many as 11 with 10 minutes to play in regulation.
